Consider and take action on a request, by the Bay Area Builders Association to waive the permit fees associated with a new home to be built in League City for a wounded war veteran (Director of Planning and Development)
Background:
The Bay Area Builders Association (BABA), through its program known as "Operation Finally Home", builds homes for wounded veterans and their families in coordination with local builders and businesses that volunteer labor and materials. As part of this effort, BABA is asking the City of League City to waive permit fees associated with construction of a home, to be built for Cpl. Jonathan Dowdell at 2828 Scandicci Drive in the Tuscan Lakes subdivision. The permit and capital recovery fees for this home total $7,387.59.
Since 2005, BABA has constructed mortgage-free homes for wounded veterans. The program is now building homes throughout the country, but its roots began in League City. To date six homes have been built in League City for wounded veterans and their families - more than any city in the country through this program. The home for Cpl. Dowdell will represent the seventh home in our community. Homes are customized to meet the needs of the veteran and family. In all previous cases the City of League City has waived all associated fees.
Cpl. Dowdell received numerous awards including the Purple Heart, A Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal with a combat V and a Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal during his services for his country.
Staff recommends approval.
