Title

Consider and take action on a resolution authorizing an agreement with CenterPoint Energy for conversion of sodium streetlights to LED streetlights (Director of Planning & Development)

Background:

Approval of this resolution will authorize the City and CenterPoint to enter into an agreement to allow CenterPoint to replace sodium streetlights to LED streetlights. Centerpoint streetlights account for approximately 30% of the total streetlights within the City. The proposed LED streetlights will be more efficient in terms of energy consumption, lighting capability, and longevity.

At the City Council meeting on July 10, 2018, City Council approved a Strategic Action Plan that provides a framework of action steps and deadlines to guide staff over the next five years. One of the goals mentioned in the plan is to cut the City’s electrical costs by implementing solar streetlights. While solar streetlights are not being implemented at this time, the LED lights will save money and maintenance on existing streetlights and will not cost the City any money or manpower to replace.  Although the tariff structure will not change, it is anticipated that the cost of electricity for the LED fixtures will save the City about $10,000 per year.

The proposed project shall commence within three months and is expected to be completed within a year.
