Consider and take action on an ordinance appointing Dick Hoskins Gregg, III as the associate judge of the Municipal Court of Record in the city of League City for the remainder of a two-year term ending on January 31, 2020 and authorizing an agreement with Dick Hoskins Gregg, III for various judicial services at a rate of $150 per hour (Assistant City Manager)
Staff recommends approval on first and final reading.
Background:
Approval of this agenda item will appoint Dick Hoskins Gregg, III ("Gregg") as associate judge for the remainder of a two-year term ending on January 31, 2020 and authorize an agreement with Gregg for various judicial services at a rate of $150 per hour.
Under Section 30.00008 of the Texas Government Code, if a vacancy occurs in the Office of the Municipal Judge of a Court of Record, the governing body shall by ordinance or charter provide for the appointment of a qualified person to fill the office for the remainder of the unexpired term. The unexpired term of the previous associate judge is set to end on January 31, 2020.
The City currently has two municipal court judge positions: a chief judge and an associate judge. The previous associate judge recently retired from his position. City staff has concluded its recruitment process and is recommending Gregg as the new permanent associate judge.
CONTRACT ORIGINATION: The Agreement will be drafted by the City Attorney's Office.
