Consider and take action on an appeal to affirm or overrule the decision of the Community Standards Review Committee regarding the book "Big Wig" by Jonathan Hillman (Council Member Mann and Mayor Long)
The Community Standards Review Committee voted 2-1, with two members absent, to relocate and restrict checkout status to adult library cards only on July 31, 2024.
Council postponed 6-2-0 on August 13, 2024.
Background:
On July 31, 2024, the Community Standards Review Committee held a public hearing and voted on a reconsideration request filed on June 26, 2024 regarding the book "Big Wig" by Jonathan Hillman. The committee voted to relocate the book to a higher shelf in the library and to restrict its checkout status to adult library cards only.
Following the committee's action, League City citizens William Pate, Katherine Swanson, Eve Gammill, Linda Stone, Eloisa Perez-Lozano and Laura Teatsworth requested an appeal of the committee's decision.
Per the Library Materials Reconsideration Policy (Ordinance 2023-03), the Committee's decision to relocate the will only be implemented if upheld by a 3/4 super majority vote of the City Council.
On August 13, 2024, the City Council voted 6-2-0 to postpone the item.
