Title:
Consider and take action on a resolution authorizing the submission of a grant application to Texas State Library and Archives Commission for the Texas Reads grant to fund teen literacy promotions in FY26 and authorizing the acceptance of such grant if awarded (Director of Parks & Cultural Services)
Background:
Approval of this item will authorize the Helen Hall Library to apply for $5,000 in funding to distribute teen reading resource bags at outreach events, such as school visits, to connect local teens with reading opportunities that fit their interests and daily lives. Each bag will include materials to help teens and their parents discover new books, explore different reading formats, and access library resources such as personalized recommendations, reading challenges, and digital tools. By reducing barriers to reading and increasing awareness of library services, this initiative will ensure more teens can engage with literacy in a way that fits their needs and supports their academic success.
Through this grant program, the Texas State Library and Archives Commission supports public library programs that promote reading and literacy within local communities. If funded by this grant, Helen Hall Library will expand access and awareness among League City and Galveston County residents to the Library’s services for teens, as well as promote the lifelong importance of literacy and learning.
Awarded organizations will be notified in August 2025, with funding disbursements beginning in September 2025. No additional matching funds from the City are required. If approved, funds will be credited to 0100-44000 (Miscellaneous Income), with expenses being charged to Library Accounts 4800000-51506 (Teen Program Supplies) and 4800000-53130 (Printing and Binding).
