Title

Consider and take action on a resolution authorizing an expenditure with Cummins Sales and Service for repair of the Public Safety Building natural gas generator in an amount not to exceed $117,409.78 (Director of Information Technology and Facilities)

Background:

Approval of this item will authorize the repair of the Public Safety Building ("PSB") natural gas generator. This is one of two generators at the PSB that the City utilizes for redundancy. This generator is natural gas and the other one is diesel.

In October of 2019, this generator had a coolant issue that caused the engine to overheat and damaged the exhaust and cylinder heads.  Cummins Sales and Service is the only manufacture authorized to work on these large generators/engines.  Staff worked with Cummins to tear the engine down to see if there was any further damage. The following issues were discovered.

o Bore scoped all cylinders and found all cylinders scored.

o Progressive damages:

                     pistons and liners

                     all exhaust manifold sections

                     water pump

                     connecting rods

                     cylinder heads

                     spark plugs

                     spark plug wires burnt

                     engine thermostats

Upon Staff's request, Cummins provided a $35,000 credit/discount for this transaction. TML insurance will provide $100,000 for the repairs and the City will be responsible for $17,409.78.
