Consider and take action on a request on behalf of the Friends of League City Seniors Foundation to grant a variance to Chapter 110, Article I, Section 110-5 of the Code of Ordinances of the City of League City entitled "Parades and Processions Generally" for lane closures, and to waive City costs associated with traffic control for the event. (Chief of Police)

Background:
If approved, this item will allow the Friends of League City Seniors Foundation to use City rights-of-way for the annual Wellness Walk event and the City will provide equipment to support traffic flow as detailed below. This will be done in accordance with the traffic plan approved by the League City Police Department. The Code of Ordinances of the City of League City, Section 110-5 requires all permit requests requiring the closure or use of state roadways or arterial roadways (as defined by the Master Transportation Plan) within League City to be approved by City Council prior to issuance of a permit. The same section also states that the applicant shall pay all costs associated with traffic control for the event unless City Council approves waiving the costs.

An application for a permit was received by the League City Police Department requesting the use of City roadways within the City of League City for the purpose of conducting a fun run entitled “CityWide 1K/5K Wellness Walk/Run”. The event is scheduled for April 26, 2014 from approximately 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. The event is expected to involve approximately 200 participants. The applicant has made a request for a variance for the use of several streets in the Historic District. The applicant requests the closure of the 200 block of Park Ave., N. Michigan Ave., Colorado Ave., N. Kansas Ave., N. Iowa Ave.; 500-800 block of Second St.; 500-1000 block of Third St.; 300-400 block of N.
