Consider and take action on an ordinance amending Chapter 18 of the Code of Ordinances to designate the City of League City as a bird sanctuary (Council Member Cones and Council Member Gross)
Background:
Approval of this item will enhance the awareness and protection of birds, bird nests and the their eggs. Development of the proposed ordinance was initiated in March, 2015. First draft of the ordinance was given to the Parks Board for the April 2015 meeting. At this meeting it was agreed that the draft should be reviewed by the City Staff and Texas Parks & Wildlife before voting on support could take place.
That draft was reviewed with input from Texas Parks & Wildlife, the Police Chief, and the Animal Services Manager and approved by Parks Board on May 7, 2015. Changes were suggested and discussed with the Parks Board at their meeting on July 2nd and again at their August 6 meeting, when they approved a new draft incorporating the recommendations. Minor changes have been made to address nuisance issues associated with private property and to meet the City’s needs to address public health safety and welfare issues associated with operating and maintaining our public easements (including improved drainage ways) and rights-of-way.
