Presentation of Art Hewitt Volunteer Spirit Award (Council Member Dugie and Council Member Bentley)
Background:
Art Hewitt dedicated 60 years of his life to the League City community by serving as a League City volunteer firefighter and inspiring countless others to make a commitment to service in League City. The City of League City honors Hewitt and keeps his passion for volunteerism alive through the Art Hewitt Volunteer Spirit Award and by declaring August 30 of every year as League City Volunteer Appreciation Day.
After its announcement with the passing of Mr. Hewitt, the Art Hewitt Volunteer Spirit Award was given for the first time in 2013. Nominations for the 2015 award were accepted through the City’s website for an award period of July 1, 2014 through June 30, 2015. Nominations were accepted for all volunteers (regardless of city of residence) involved in a City-related cause or project. As noted on the website announcement of the award, “The award is open to all volunteers; nominees do not need to live or work in League City but must volunteer for a City-related cause or project. Nominees will have made a significant contribution to League City by volunteering time and service to a City-related cause or project (including but not limited to, Helen Hall Library, Volunteer Fire Department, Animal Shelter, Leaders Make Readers, Volunteers in Policing, etc.)”
The winner of the 2016 Art Hewitt Spirit Award was selected by a committee that included members of City staff. The committee also chose to recognize an outstanding long-term volunteer contribution with an “Above and Beyond” award. Both award winners are to be announced at the Council meeting.
