Recognition of the 2016 Texas Amateur Athletic Federation League City Male and Female Athletes of the Year (Mayor Hallisey and Council Member Gripon)

Background:

Texas Amateur Athletic Federation and the City of League City have the opportunity to recognize one male and female athlete from each affiliated City based on their character and achievements throughout the year. Those athletes are eligible to advance to regional and state athlete of the year recognitions. Due to their success in 2016, the Recreation Department would like to recognize Scott Maier and Mikayla Simek as the 2016 Male and Female League City Athletes of the Year.

Scott, age 9, was never one of the biggest or fastest kids on the basketball court, but excelled due to his work ethic determination and desire. He was a major key in helping guide TEAM Thunder to an 8U City Championship, advancing to the TAAF Regional Tournament in Lake Jackson. Scott also played shortstop, pitcher and first base for The Threshers, which won the Dixie American League Championship. He was selected to the League City All-Star team, where he was the starting pitcher for the team that advanced to the semifinals in the District 14 tournament. The Recreation Department is proud to recognize Scott Maier as the 2016 TAAF League City Male Athlete of the Year.

Makayla, age 12, is a team player both on and off the court. She is the first to practice and the last to leave. Makayla led her team to an undefeated season and 1st place in the League City tournament, advancing to the regional tournament in Lake Jackson. It was there where Makayla helped her team to a 2nd place finish at regionals, advancing to the state tournament in Waco, TX, where her team finished 3rd place. Makalya is an all-around great athlete and leader who leads by example with her hard work, positive attitude and leadership. The Recreation Department is proud to recognize Makayla Simek as the 2016 TAAF League City Female Athlete of the Year.
