Austin League, Abstract No. 3, in Galveston County, Texas on Walker Street adjacent to and Southwest of the League City Public Safety Building from use as park land to use as the location of the League City Animal Shelter (Director of Public Works)

Background:
This agenda item will change the use of the property located on 8.067 acres of land in the Stephen F. Austin League, Abstract No. 3, in Galveston County, Texas on Walker Street adjacent to and Southwest of the League City Public Safety Building (the “Property”). The use of Property is being transitioned to best serve the community. The Property was originally dedicated by the City Council to be used as parkland in 2009 but the Property has remained unimproved. The Property is strategically located adjacent to the League City Public Safety Building. After extensive review, city staff has determined the Property will be the best location for the new League City Animal Shelter.

In accordance with Texas Parks and Wildlife Code, Chapter 26, "Protection of Public Parks and Recreation Lands", the City is required to take specific action in order to transition the Property from park use to use connected with the League City Animal Shelter. The City will hold a public hearing prior to any action taken and inform the public in a local newspaper of the dates and location of the public hearing. On June 6, 13 and 20, 2017, the City duly notified the public through the Galveston Daily News, of the date and location of the public hearing. After the public hearing, the City must make the determination that there is no feasible and prudent alternative to the planned use and all reasonable planning has been performed to minimize any harm to the land resulting from the use.
