Title

Consider and take action on Ordinance No. 2017-23 amending Article 1, of Chapter 106 of the Code of Ordinances of the City of League City, entitled "Taxation",  by adding a new section 106-5 relating to an ad valorem tax freeze for residential homestead property owners who are disabled or 65 years or older - Second Reading (Council Member Long and Council Member Becker)

Council approved first reading 8-0-0 on September 12, 2017.

Background:

This proposed ordinance is an administrative change that will officially add Section 106-5 of Chapter 106, "Taxation", to the Code of Ordinances of the City of League City relating to an ad valorem tax freeze for residential homestead property owners who are disabled or 65 years or older.

On February 14, 2006, the City Council passed Ordinance 2006-08 to implement an ad valorem tax freeze on residential homesteads of disabled individuals or individuals age 65 or older.  However, the City did not order the codification of Ordinance 2006-08.

This proposed ordinance would formally readopt the tax freeze adopted by Ordinance 2006-08, which reduced the tax burden on retired persons with fixed incomes as well disabled veterans of the United States military, and provide for the codification of this law so that individuals who are disabled or over age 65 can more readily access its provisions and claim its benefits.
