Consider and take action on a resolution authorizing a two-year agreement with Linebarger Goggan Blair & Sampson, LLP. for collection of delinquent property taxes (Director of Finance)
Background:
Approval of this item will authorize a two-year agreement between the City and Linebarger Goggan Blair & Sampson, LLP, for the collection of delinquent property taxes.
The firm's fee for collecting delinquent property taxes is twenty (20) percent of total tax, penalty and interest collected. Pursuant to the Texas Property Tax Code, the twenty percent (20%) will be added to each delinquent tax bill and will be borne entirely by the delinquent taxpayers. Fees will not be paid to the law firm until the monies owed are actually recovered from the delinquent taxpayer. The Galveston County Tax Office will continue to handle collections of the delinquent fees and the subsequent payment of the fees to the law firm.
Since October 2015, Linebarger has collected approximately $837,000 in delinquent property taxes. The recommendation is to approve the agreement through July 31, 2020.
