Consider and take action on an ordinance amending Chapter 58 of the Code of Ordinances of City of League City entitled "Law Enforcement" by amending Division 1, Article II, entitled "Police" to update and codify existing regulations that established the Police Department (Chief of Police)
Staff recommends approval on first and final reading.
Background:
Approval of this agenda item will formally incorporate an ordinance that established the League City Police Department into the City's official Code of Ordinances and update the provisions contained therein to reflect the transition to a City Manager form of government.
Under Article X, Section 27 of the League City Charter, the City Council is authorized to create, by ordinance, a Police Department consisting of a Chief of Police and such other personnel as necessary for the protection of its citizens. On November 17, 1963, the City Council passed Ordinance 1963-33, which created the League City Police Department. Ordinance 1963-33 was not included the Code of Ordinances of the City of League City.
The Texas Police Chiefs Association, an organization dedicated to implementing the best practices and procedures for all law police departments, recommends that all municipalities have a clear and transparent grant of authority within their charter or code of ordinances regarding its police department. The League City Police Department recommends that Council re-adopts an ordinance that established the Police Department and formally codify the ordinance into the City's Code of Ordinances.
