Title
Consider and take action on a resolution authorizing an interlocal agreement between the City of League City, and the United States Department of Justice to participate in the Drug Enforcement Administration's Regional Tactical Diversion Task Force (Chief of Police)

Background:
Approval of this resolution will authorize the League City Police Department to participate in the Drug Enforcement Administration’s regional tactical diversion task force. The Police Department supplements the task force by providing one officer to serve in the capacity of Task Force Officer.

This officer conducts investigations in the trafficking of controlled substance pharmaceuticals in Houston and the surrounding area while serving in this capacity. Many of these investigations result in the seizure of property and/or currency. As a member agency in the task force in Galveston County for the past nine years, the City of League City has shared in the proceeds from these seizures through the Federal Fund Sharing program. The current position that is assigned to the task force in Galveston County predominately focuses on narcotics investigation. With the task force in Harris County, they predominately focus on the illegal trafficking of controlled substance pharmaceuticals produced from places commonly referred to as “pill mills” and illegally distributed by doctors. The City’s share of funds received through this program in Galveston County has averaged $71,425.67 per year over the last three years. The average funds that have been received by the agencies currently assigned to the task force in Harris County has been approximately $153,000 per year over the last three years.

CONTRACT ORIGINATION: The City Attorney’s Office has reviewed and approved the content of this Interlocal Agreement.
