Title

Consider and take action to rename the City of League City’s “Above and Beyond Award” as the “Steve Jones Inspiration Award” (Council Member Dugie and Council Member Gripon)

Background:

Approval of this item will rename the “Above and Beyond Award” as the “Steve Jones Inspiration Award”.

Steve Jones worked as a page at the Helen Hall Library for fifteen years and served as the library’s official greeter at all events, ultimately becoming the face of the library, as well as its heart and soul.  Steve was dedicated and devoted to League City, and despite dealing with health issues and other challenges, he managed to uplift and enlighten everyone he met. His contributions to League City prove that every individual has the power to inspire others through their actions and make a positive impact on the world around them.

In 2013, the City created the “Above and Beyond Award”, which is presented to a volunteer at the second Council Meeting in August, along with the Art Hewitt Volunteer Spirit Award. There is no real description or parameters for this award, so by renaming this award, departments and/or City staff members can nominate a City volunteer for this award, with the winner to be selected by a committee of City staff and Council. The award will be given yearly to an individual who is not only dedicated to serving a City cause or project but whose everyday actions and contributions, no matter how big or small, have made a lasting impact on our community and have inspired others to serve and engage in our City. The first award will be presented in August 2019.
