Title
Consider and take action on a resolution adopting a population estimate of 109,087, as of January 1, 2020, for use in all city-related business in calendar year 2020 (Executive Director of Development Services)

Background:
Approval of this item will allow the City to adopt the population estimate for January 1, 2020 of 109,087 to use in all city-related business in calendar year 2020.

Annual population estimates are important in assisting the City in planning for investments and services. There are several organizations that produce annual population estimates for cities and counties including the United States Census Bureau, Texas State Data Center, and ESRI. The Planning Department monitors these estimates and has used them in the past for a number of planning purposes. However, to have more timely information, as many of these estimates are published a year later, the Planning Department prepares the City’s own estimates based on new housing starts data, obtained from the Building Department. During 2019, the City issued 802 building permits for new single-family dwellings. Population estimates based on this methodology have been historically consistent with Census Bureau population estimates for League City. The census will be performed for 2020 and this year’s official population will change once the census is finalized.
