Consider and take action on a resolution authorizing an Interlocal Agreement with Pasadena, La Porte and Baytown for participation in the Bay Area Regional Bomb Squad (BARBS), which approves our bomb technicians to operate as members of that regional team (Chief of Police)
Background:
If approved, this item will allow the City of League City to maintain a federally supported bomb squad as part of our service delivery to our community. Currently, our two (2) bomb technicians operate under the Texas City Regional Bomb Squad. Texas City has decided to remove themselves from the bomb squad due to internal issues, thus dissolving the Texas City Regional Bomb Squad. The FBI has requested that the League City bomb technicians become members of BARBS. BARBS has agreed to the addition of our technicians.
BARBS is made up of bomb technicians from Baytown, Pasadena and LaPorte Police Departments. The combined team has been a regional asset for approximately 13 years with experience dating back approximately 40 years. By federal mandate, our bomb technicians must be assigned to a federally sanctioned bomb squad to maintain their certifications and operational status. The authorization of this Interlocal Agreement not only meets the federal mandate but significantly increases the manpower and resources available to our community for the mitigation of explosive related threats.
