Title

Consider and take action on a resolution authorizing the submission of a grant application to Better World Books to seek funding through the FY2025 Literacy Grant to support a quarterly distribution of early literacy kits and authorizing the acceptance of such grant if awarded (Director of Parks & Cultural Services)

Background:

Approval of this item will authorize the Helen Hall Library to apply for $5,000 in funding to begin a quarterly distribution of early literacy kits. Kits will include books, early literacy activities, guides for parents and caregivers, and information about Helen Hall Library’s early literacy services. League City’s W.I.C. office at UTMB will distribute these quarterly kits to their client families.

Through this grant program, Better World Books supports projects that address literacy challenges, enhance educational opportunities, and expand access to reading. If funded by this grant, Helen Hall Library will expand access among League City and Galveston County residents to the library’s early literacy services, supporting cognitive development, language acquisition, and school-readiness.

Awarded organizations will be notified and funds disbursed in May 2025. No additional staff or matching funds from the City are required. If approved, funds will be credited to 0100-44000 (Miscellaneous Income), with expenses being charged to Library Accounts 4800000-51502 (Children’s Materials) and 4800000-51503 (Children’s Program Supplies)
