Title

Consider and take action on a resolution adopting a Holiday Decorations Policy (Mayor Long, Mayor Pro Tem Cones, Councilmember Chadwell)

Background:

The City of League City is considering a resolution that would establish guidelines for how holiday decorations are displayed at City Hall and other public spaces. The goal of this policy is to create a festive and inclusive holiday atmosphere that brings people together, reflects the community’s history and traditions, and complies with constitutional requirements.

Across the United States, holiday displays commonly feature a variety of symbols, including lights, menorahs, trees, snowflakes, snowmen, angels, Santa, nutcrackers and nativity scenes, which many communities use to reflect the season’s cultural and historical tradition.  As a government organization, the City must ensure that any decorations placed on public property follow constitutional rules that require neutrality toward religion while also being welcoming to people of all beliefs and backgrounds. This policy provides a clear framework to help the City celebrate the holiday season in a way that is culturally meaningful, community-focused, and legally sound.
