Title
Consider and take action on a resolution authorizing the submission of a grant application to the Community Oriented Policing Services Office, U.S. Department of Justice, to seek funding to implement new programs and enhance existing mental health and wellness programs for officers, other departmental employees, and their families (Chief of Police)

Background:
Approval of this item will allow the Police Department to submit a grant proposal to the Community Oriented Policing Services Office, U.S. Department of Justice, to seek funding to implement new programs and enhance existing mental health and wellness programs for officers, other departmental employees, and their families.

The Community Oriented Policing Services Office (COPS), U.S. Department of Justice, is soliciting grant applications from law enforcement agencies to provide funds for mental health and wellness programs for police officers and departmental employees. The grant funding is available through FY 2024. Each award will be two years in duration for a maximum of $200,000 per award. There is no required local cash match associated with this grant.

The grant funds must be used to provide training, programming, and support services for law enforcement officers, crime scene technicians, dispatchers, and others regularly exposed to trauma. The grant-funded programs can be directed at multiple aspects of law enforcement officer and family wellness, from financial literacy to substance use disorders to preventing the suicide death of a colleague.

If funded, the grant would allow the agency to enhance the established peer support program and implement other training and programs that focus on departmental employees' mental health and wellness. This initiative would align with the State of Texas’ recent push to increase the health and wellness of first responders.
