Consider and take action on a resolution authorizing an interlocal agreement between the City of League City and the County of Galveston to participate in the Gulf Coast Auto Crimes Task Force (Chief of Police)
Background:
The Galveston County Sheriff’s Office is requesting the League City Police Department’s participation in a multijurisdictional task force funded by the Motor Vehicle Crime Prevention Authority of the State of Texas. The Motor Vehicle Crime Prevention Authority has funded $1,446,838 for the sustainment of the Gulf Coast Auto Crimes Task Force (GCACTF). The League City Police Department would provide one detective who would be assigned to the GCACTF. A portion of the funds awarded to sustain the task force will be used to pay the assigned detective’s salary, training, a vehicle, and auxiliary equipment.
The City of League City is being asked to contribute $33,577 to pay for the assigned detective’s fringe benefits (professional and contractual services) and $2,400 to pay for fuel for the detective’s assigned vehicle. The total matching funds requested to help sustain the enhancement of the funded grant program would be $35,977, which the City of League City would pay to the detective, regardless of whether they are assigned to the GCACTF or not.
From October 1, 2024, through September 30, 2025, the League City Police Department received 236 reports of burglary of motor vehicles, 82 reports of unauthorized use of motor vehicles, and 54 reports of stolen motor vehicle parts. Crimes associated with motor vehicle thefts and burglaries are among the most common offenses in League City. It is not uncommon for offenders involved in these crimes to cross jurisdictional lines and be part of larger, organized crime rings.
